Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain is the sole TLD meant for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to book john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired 3rd-level names remained working.
